Quando a NASA começou por mandar astronautas para o espaço, eles descobriram rapidamente que as canetas de gel (bola na ponta) nao funcionaria em gravidade zero. Para combater esse problema, os cientistas da NASA passaram uma decada e 12 biliões de dólares a desenvolver uma caneta que escrevia sem gravidade, ao contrario, debaixo de agua, e em qualquer outra superficie como em vidro e em temperaturas que congelavam abaixo dos 300ºC.
